Activation of the new site

The new website of the Department of Earth Sciences is now available. This site has been restructured in order to make it more accessible also to disabled people, in agreement with Italian Law no. 4 of January 9th, 2004, which establishes that websites pertaining to public boards must provide services and information without any discrimination against the disabled who may require special technological assistance. The spirit of this law is that public administrations must guarantee everybody the right to access Internet services without barriers of any kind.

Geological Sciences
Geological Sciences study the planet Earth and everything concerning its origin as well as the physical, chemical and biological processes which have accompanied its continuous evolution. It is extremely important to understand the processes and mechanisms which have made the Earth a constantly changing planet, not only to safeguard effectively the Environment and the Earth-system itself but also to guarantee our own survival, since Man depends on the environment and its resources. The main goal of these study-courses is to enable students to understand the fundamental concepts of geological sciences and to form professionally responsible graduates. A further goal is the spreading of scientific culture, allowing young graduates to acquire both a professional conscience regarding the exploitation of environmental resources and knowledge of the latest progress in science and technology.

Natural Sciences
The first level course in Natural Sciences aims to provide students with the fundamentals of a holistic scientific approach to the understanding of the elements and processes that govern the Environment. Graduates will take part in activities which require knowledge of various disciplines in diverse contexts, e.g. urban planning, educational centres, co-operatives collaborating with Monuments and Fine Arts Offices, Parks and natural reserves. They will also offer their experience to public and private agencies involved in territorial planning and upgrading of ecosystems damaged by human interference. Access to the job market is aided by activities known as "communications on Nature" which aim to promote Natural Sciences for the safeguard of natural environments and life quality. At the end of the 1st level, students wishing to continue their studies can enrol in the two-year specialisation Master course in Sciences for the Environment and Territory. The goal of this Master course is to prepare specialists for the management of complex environmental systems, with multidisciplinary knowledge and competence. The possible professional spin-off concerns the following: state administration agencies (environment, agriculture and forest management ministries etc.); local administration boards (regions, provinces, municipalities, consortia of communes in mountain areas, natural parks etc.); mid-large industries (management of quality and safety standards); firms dealing with environmental management such as waste disposal, renewable energy etc.; self-employment as consultants for small firms in wide fields of applications, EU norms concerning quality and safety standards, industrial hygiene, waste disposal techniques, environmental impact assessment etc.

Cultural Asset Sciences
The degree course in Cultural Asset Sciences pursues the main goal of integrating the humanities with the sciences through the study of archaeological, historical-architectonic and library Assets and the specific contexts in which they are found. Historical and scientific investigations into the environmental and cultural roots of particular assets can help to define how they are related to the territory around them and recognise their function as part of our collective Heritage. The formational aims of this degree course can be summarised as follows: i) to create an interface of communication and cultural integration between the humanities and specific technical-scientific studies; ii) to provide information and methods which enable students to operate in the field of cultural Assets; iii) to instruct them on computer-based classifications of cultural Assets in relation to conservation as well as appraisal and popularisation.

PhD course in Earth Sciences
The PhD course in Earth Sciences lasts three years and is divided into 5 curricula: i) Geological-Geomorphological Curriculum; ii) Mineralogical-crystallographic Curriculum; iii) Petrological-geochemical-ore deposit Curriculum; iv) Risks, resources and geological impact Curriculum; v) Earth Sciences for Cultural Assets Curriculum.
The opportunity to complete PhD courses in such wide-ranging research fields is guaranteed by: a) the presence of highly competent researchers and tutors on the teaching staff; b) consolidated and effective scientific collaboration with qualified public boards; c) the opportunity to gain access to training courses in important research centres abroad; d) adequate funding resources and complete availability of scientific and educational equipment. Numerous international connections have been activated for PhD courses at both an educational level (Erasmus and Socrates Programmes of the European Union) and a research level, with several research groups from various countries (France, Great Britain, Spain, United States, Brazil). The Department of Earth Sciences has constant links with other Italian research agencies such as archaeological offices, local facility companies etc.
